Recent research shows eight of 10 tech pros believe the best defense against today’s ransomware epidemic is an “immutable” backup storage system based on “Zero Trust” principles.

What is immutable storage? A backup protocol that protects stored data by preventing any change or alterations for either a set or indefinite period of time. During this interval, stored data cannot be modified or deleted by anyone – including authorized users with administrative privileges.

What is Zero Trust? Techopedia defines Zero Trust as an IT operating strategy that “assumes no end-user, computing device, web service, or network connection can be trusted — even when an access request originates from within the organization’s own network perimeter.” Here are three basic Zero Trust practices:

Monitor every type of network traffic for the full spectrum of cyber threats continuously
Identify and validate users of all kinds and devices of every sort continuously
Adjust and refine cybersecurity policies, protocols and procedures continually in response to data gleaned from practicing the first two measures

How do immutable backups and Zero Trust methods work together? In short, once a backup file is created no one is trusted with access to it. Critical proprietary and operational information is secured fully until a later iteration replaces it.

That’s why we advise implementing a robust backup and disaster recovery (BUDR) routine as the bulwark of a cyber resilient organization:

Maintain regular local image backups of core technology
Generate and store offsite and/or cloud backups of these images daily
Sustain this hybrid configuration for rapid restoration in the wake of cyber disasters like a ransomware attack
