Remote, mobile workplace environments are now part of the mix for businesses of all sizes today. Workers are using laptops, tablets and smartphones to conduct business in all kinds of places besides the office.

The ability to work anytime, anywhere is also considered a benefit by many employees, and studies show that enabling remote work helps retention.

As a result, virtual technologies are more crucial than ever, and cloud solutions are the backbone of secure, reliable hybrid environments. The key is identifying the appropriate path for your business, industry and work style. Here are a few key cloud terms—and options—you should be familiar with:

  • IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service): A foundational or broad platform upon which other cloud systems are built and delivered. Amazon Web Services is a familiar example.
  • DaaS (desktop-as-a-service): The next level down from IaaS, PaaS (platform-as-a-service) suppliers offer a framework and basic set of functions that developers use to create applications. Prime examples include Google App Engine and Microsoft Azure.
  • SaaS (software-as-a-service) Any web-based software or service available by lease, usually on a per user basis and with monthly or annual plans (e.g., Microsoft Office 365).
