A recent post by international trade group CompTIA describes cybersecurity as a “shared responsibility” with three stakeholders playing critical roles:
- Technology vendors provide secure, compliant products.
- Businesses engage in education and training for employees
- IT managed services providers (MSPs) act as trusted advisors, facilitating and enhancing the first two roles
“Together, this synergistic approach amplifies the effectiveness of cybersecurity strategies, creating a resilient business,” CompTIA wrote.
How do MSPs “amplify” cybersecurity strategy? By consistently and persistently delivering a comprehensive set of services that extend beyond security into assessment, deployment and continuing support:
- Server and Networking Services
- Email Management
- Cloud Computing
- Backup and Recovery (BUDR)
Why should leaders of small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) work with an MSP to build a cybersecure triangle? Here are three reasons:
- Per the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Q1-2024 small-business index, SMB owners are just as concerned about cyberattacks as they are about other business disruptions such as another pandemic or supply chain interruptions. Six of 10 SMBs sampled reported being worried about cyber threats.
- Businesses across industries are improving in monitoring cyberattacks such as ransomware. A survey by a security vendor discovered that eight of 10 professionals polled had spotted a cyberattack within the last 12 months.
- Yet, increased cyber vigilance shows no signs of lowering – or even slowing – the rising tide of cybercrime such as ransomware. Cybersecurity analysts in multiple studies generate varying statistics but all agree that popularity, diversity and frequency of this cyber extortion technique continues growing across all business sectors – particularly at the SMB level.
